Blessed with the perfect combination that any designer would enjoy in clients, these entrepreneurs have backgrounds in Finance and Publishing at Conde Nast. Transforming this 3-bedroom open-floor plan apartment in the heart of NYC’s bustling SOHO neighborhood into a home for a growing family was quite the adventure.
With two small children under the age of three it was important to maintain a happy medium between glamour and comfort. Color and pattern were used in playful ways throughout the apartment through the textiles, decorative wall finishes and wallpaper. The open-floor living room, dining room and kitchen combination needed a small addition to make our desired, albeit less traditional floor plan, work. By extending the wall between the quintessential “downtown” New York columns, we were able to create a defined dining area, which provided us the opportunity to find this special 1960’s Swarovski crystal chandelier, custom 72” dining table and customized Barbara Barry Baker chairs. This setting seats up to 10 and is where everything from formal dining to crafts projects take place. A Slim Aarons photograph from the Hotel du Cap where the couple honeymooned sits happily above the Italian lacquered tangerine sideboard. In the living area, we were able to create two distinct seating areas, one by the stone fireplace and the other by the TV, but most importantly by placing the sofas side by side we were able to allow for large parties and informal gatherings to feel as though they were all enjoying the same space. The Hickory “Camp Chairs” and swivel wing chairs support these seating areas in style and provide additional seating. The custom bone coffee table and media cabinet are both key pieces in bridging function and design. The white walls in this room allow for a seamless flow between the rooms and act as a perfect backdrop to their ever-growing modern art collection. Lucite drapery hardware and beautiful Threads blue and white panels are the vertical accents that frame the windows. As we move into the son’s bedroom, the wide horizontal navy blue stripes paired with a thin gold leaf detail helped resolve the awkward change in ceiling height. The custom bench and area rug are practical for this young boy’s evolving needs, while the large TV/bookshelf allow for growth and multiple uses of this room. The daughter’s bedroom color theme began with the custom drapery panels in a lime green Schumacher print that we paired with bubble gum pink. The bathrooms allowed for some fun applications of the Quadrille wallpaper, against the travertine-lined walls that we paired with the Madeline Weinrib rug. The master bedroom’s walls were lined with the strong navy graphic print by Quadrille and custom Stark area rug. The beautiful Maison Jansen desk is a unique piece that doubles as a vanity. On the opposing end of the room, we went with a Pierre Frey citron velvet custom chaise lounge, which added another touch of bright color. The master bath was painted in a soothing blue, and a small personal photography gallery wall was all we needed to add as the final touch. |
